Corrections
A Transit Performance Brief on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) posted in December 2004 incorrectly
said that costs per passenger mile had increased more than inflation from 1983 to 2002. Costs declined 2.8 percent. Similarly the WMATA cost
escalation reported relative to the airline industry and the San Diego bus system was less (WMATA operations spending would have
been correctly reported as approximately $360 million more per year than if costs had been controlled to the same extent as in the airline industry or
San Diego). The error was caused by the inadvertent use of a 1992 ridership figure in the base calculation.
