Recently released Federal Transit Administration data (National Transit Database 1995) indicates:

  • Transit ridership has dropped to its lowest level since 1975 (the first year of federal operating subsidies).

  • Annual per capita ridership has dropped 26.3 percent since 1970 --- virtually all of the decline has occured since 1984.
