DRAFT

HIGHLIGHTS
In 1970 there was no Metro (heavy rail) service.
By 2000 nearly all of the proposed Metro system was opened.
In the Virginia portion of the WMATA (transit agency) service area, transit's work trip market share dropped from 11.8 percent in 1970 (before Metro) to 9.8 percent in 2000 (with Metro)
Virginia suffered at 17 percent transit market share loss, compared to the DC loss of 12 percent.
More than 90 percent of new demand was for modes other than transit in Virginia (mainly automobiles)
Transit market share increased from 6.8 percent in the Maryland service area, to 12.3 percent
DC lost nearly 75,000 workers, and the transit loss was 40,000, or 54 percent.
As a result, the North of Potomac transit market share (DC and Virginia) dropped from 19.5 percent to 17.2 percent.
