Large Funding Gap Overcome by "NO" Campaign

A transit sales tax issue to build light rail in Phoenix and expand bus service was defeated by a narrow margin in the 9 September 1997 election

  • The "NO" side obtained 50.1 percent of the votes and the "YES" side 49.9 percent.

  • The "NO" side overcame a substantial funding disadvantage, being outspent by the "YES" side $500,000 to $10,000 --- a 50 to 1 disadvantage.
