COMMENTARY
- Public transport's market share loss escalated in the 1990s. From 1983 to 1990 the annual market share loss
was 2.19 percent, while the 1990 to 1995 loss has intensified to minus 4.23 percent annually --- a nearly doubling
of the loss rate. This is generally consistent with overall ridership trends noted
elsewhere.
- Despite the popular belief that commuting times are increasing rapidly, the data shows no such trend.
From 1983 to 1990, the average work trip increased by 12.4 seconds. From 1990 to 1995 the average
increase dropped to 8.4 seconds.
- The average private vehicle work trip speed in 1995 was 31 miles per hour, 65 percent faster than the
public transport average speed. Commuter rail was the fastest of the public transport modes at 29.4 miles
per hour. Bus and urban rail were 15.9 and 16.8 miles per hour respectively.
