Miami Rejects
Urban Rail Tax
Large Funding Gap Overcome by "NO" Campaign
A transit sales tax issue to expand a heavy rail system by nearly 100 miles was overwhelmingly
defeated in the Dade County (Miami) Denver area in July 1999 election. In addition to building rail, the
tax would have been used to eliminate roadway tolls in the county.
- The "NO" side obtained 68 percent of the votes and the "YES" side 32 percent.
- The "NO" side overcame a substantial funding disadvantage, being outspent by the "YES" side $1,800,000
to $125,000
--- a 14 to 1 disadvantage.
