Methodology Notes
Public transport data from National Transit Database
Public transport market share estimation method: Daily ridership data assumed to be 1/300 of
annual for each system. Daily street and highway person miles estimated using FHWA urbanized
area vehicle miles data, adjusted to account for the difference between urbanized area and
metropolitan area populations. Average vehicle occupancy rates from NPTS urbanized area data,
where available, otherwise the national urban rate is assumed.
