SKARIKA PROPOSAL ADVANCES:
Cities & Regional Government Agree: Replace Regional Government with
Local Democracy & Cooperation
in the Hamilton-Wentworth Region
12 March 1997

After being threatened with amalgamation into the Hamilton-Wentworth Regional government, local municipalities have unanimously agreed to a plan to dismantle the regional government, strengthen municipalities and work cooperatively to deal with regional needs. The plan, authored by Ontario Provincial Parliament member Tony Skarika (Progressive Conservative) received approval from the final unit of government in the Hamilton-Wentworth region on March 11, by an 18-8 vote of the Hamilton- Wentworth Regional Council.

The Skarika Plan is being considered by the provincial government.
