Delaware County (Pennsylvania)
Privatizes Prison

NEWS BRIEF

Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in the Philadelphia metropolitan area broke ground for a 1,200 bed addition to its prison on June 19, 1996. The facility is being built by and will be operated by the Wackenhut Corporation. Wackenhut was awarded the design/build and operations contract through a competitive procurement.

The county had already competitively contracted operation of the existing prison, with cost savings estimated at 15 percent compared to non-competitive government operation.

The new facility will be the first privately built and operated prison in the U.S. northeast.

Delaware County has a population of nearly 600,000.
